Cavity Ring-down Biosensing

چکیده
Cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) is an established technique for gases sensing that is newly emerging in the field of optical biosensing. This approach measures changes in the rate of decay of light injected into an optical resonator and relates them to optical loss along its length. This principle has recently been adapted for use in liquids, providing a highly sensitive method for quantitative biosensing applications. Such approaches, which can incorporate evanescent field sensing elements, have been demonstrated for the detection of molecular absorption in liquids, absorption of surface bound species and scattering response of individual cells. Building on the high sensitivity that CRDS brings to molecular spectroscopy instrumentation, evanescent wave CRDS represents the current state of the art holds significant potential for a range of biosensing applications.

Single-cell detection by cavity ring-down spectroscopy
The implementation of cavity ring-down spectroscopy in an optical fiber resonator extends the viability of this highly sensitive technique for label-free detection of biological species. By chemically treating the surface of discrete tapered sensing regions along the length of a physically extended optical fiber resonator, we show single-cell sensitivity arising from optical scattering of the e...
متن کاملSimultaneous measurement of quality factor and wavelength shift by phase shift microcavity ring down spectroscopy.
Optical resonant microcavities with ultra high quality factors are widely used for biosensing. Until now, the primary method of detection has been based upon tracking the resonant wavelength shift as a function of biodetection events. One of the sources of noise in all resonant-wavelength shift measurements is the noise due to intensity fluctuations of the laser source. An alternative approach ...

Evanescent wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (EW-CRDS) is described. The total internal reflection (TIR)-ring and monolithic folded cavity designs are briefly discussed. The performance of EW-CRDS for trace water vapor detection is evaluated by accounting for surface chemical and physical properties as well as intrinsic resonator properties. INTRODUCTION Cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) us...
متن کاملModel-Based, Closed-Loop Control of PZT Creep for Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy.
Cavity ring-down spectrometers typically employ a PZT stack to modulate the cavity transmission spectrum. While PZTs ease instrument complexity and aid measurement sensitivity, PZT hysteresis hinders the implementation of cavity-length-stabilized, data-acquisition routines. Once the cavity length is stabilized, the cavity's free spectral range imparts extreme linearity and precision to the meas...
متن کاملThe superposition principle and cavity ring-down spectroscopy
Cavity ring-down is becoming a widely used technique in gas phase spectroscopy. It holds promise for further important extensions, which will lead to even more frequent use. However, we have found widespread confusion in the literature about the nature of coherence effects, especially when the optical cavity constituting the ring-down cell is excited with a short coherence length laser source. ...
